A former Silicon Valley venture capitalist suing her old firm over allegations of sex discrimination and retaliation is seeking $16 million in damages.

According to Reuters, the litigation was originally filed in 2012 after the plaintiff, Ellen Pao, contended she was passed over for a promotion and pay raise, and subsequently asked to leave, because she had complained about harassment from a male partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. At the time of her allegedly forced resignation, Pao had been with the firm for seven years.

While Kleiner has denied the allegations made by Pao, the lawsuit has reportedly sparked a wider debate about sexism prevalent throughout Silicon Valley.

A hearing held on Monday, February 2, in San Francisco Superior Court was the first time that the number of damages Pao is vying for was publicly disclosed. Key to the dealings has been attempting to establish the valuation of the social news and community website Reddit. As Pao is currently serving Reddit as its interim CEO, establishing how much the social website is worth is necessary in determining what Pao may be owed in lost compensation from Kleiner.

The case is expected to go to court on February 17.
