According to The Associated Press, Culpeper County, Virginia, Deputy Matthew Manuel has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office as well as former Sheriff Jim Branch and former jailer Lieutenant Donald Brooks. Manuel alleges that he was terminated in retaliation for reporting an assault incident that occurred on August 12, 2011, at Culpeper County Jail to both Brooks and Branch.

"Brooks and Branch cooperated and collectively took action against [the] plaintiff for following the rules of the office," states the complaint, as noted by the Star-Exponent, a Virginia media publication. "[The] plaintiff's termination was wrongful and was done with the deliberate intention by the defendants as a means of retaliation for [the] plaintiff's proper behavior."

The news outlets note that four other deputies were also terminated as a result of the incident, but states that they were all rehired in January 2012 when a new sheriff took office.

Manuel is purportedly seeking $300,000 in monetary damages.
