Sandra Canfield of Massena, New York, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the United States following the death of her husband, Frank.

According to the Watertown Daily Times, Frank underwent open heart surgery at Buffalo Veteran Affairs Medical Center, which is operated by the U.S. federal government, on July 19, 2011. The plaintiff alleges that medical personnel at the facility had incorrectly connected a coronary bypass machine that was used for her husband's procedure, noting that this caused his right ventricle to tear.

"The suit claims […] that the death was a direct cause of hospital employees' carelessness and negligence and that employees failed to follow proper procedures or protocols regarding the performance of a coronary bypass," states the source. "[It also claims] that employees failed to properly and adequately follow up on Mr. Canfield's care so as to timely recognize and respond to damage allegedly caused by the care."
