The family of a 15-year-old boy who was fatally shot by two police officers in Bakersfield, California, has reached a $75,000 settlement with the defendants, local news outlet KGET.com reports. According to the source, the incident occurred on July 9, 2010, when two police officers began pursuing Traveon Avila, who was suspected of stealing a car. The law enforcement officials allege that their lives were in danger when they shot at the victim, claiming that Avila had begun backing his car up in their direction after they exited their vehicle.
Following an investigation, the Bakersfield Police Department determined that the officers were justified in opening fire against Avila, but the plaintiffs challenged this ruling, alleging what 23ABC Bakersfield refers to as "a long list of wrongdoing."
"It is an unfortunate event, everybody recognizes that, but these things happen when the officers are attempting to protect the public," said Mick Marderosian, one of the defendants' attorneys, as reported by KGET.com. "That's their job. But, they also have the right to protect themselves and their lives."
